MQ-9 Reaper: The Future of Medium Altitude Drones

The Air Force is searching for a new drone at medium altitude. The MQ-X program was shut down in 2012, but the Air Force is now moving to great power competition with its adversaries, as described in the 2018 National Defense Strategy. The Air Force published a request for information in June to solicit industry feedback regarding digital engineering projects and innovative development techniques. Numerous major defense companies replied, but the key feature of the new medium height drone will be its affordability and versatility.

Air Force buys 3,750 pounds of ordnance

The Air Force purchased recently three thousand and seventy-five pounds of MQ-9 Reaper ordnance. It is a purchase that will continue to grow as the demand for drones increases. The Reaper can carry 3,000 lbs of ordnance. It is also capable of being operated from distances greater than 5 miles. Britain and France recently bought similar numbers of Reapers, but France isn't yet ready to arm the drones.

It can carry 3,750 pounds of ordnance

The Reaper is a highly sophisticated unmanned aircraft vehicle. The aircraft can hold up to 3750 pounds of ordnance. This makes it capable of targeting even the largest targets. France recently bought 16 of these unmanned aircraft at a cost of $1.5 billion. It also includes the production sensor pods and mobile ground control station for Block 5 (and Block 30) MQ-9 aircraft. Work on the contract must be completed by April 30th, 2023.

It can hunt targets

The MQ-9 Reaper unmanned small aircraft is used by the U.S. Air Force for hunting terrorist targets. The Reaper has the mission of killing a senior terrorist chief. The Reaper's missions are classified but it has killed hundreds terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq. In multiple operations, the aircraft has been able to kill Taliban and Al Qaeda senior leaders. The MQ-9 is also capable of killing civilians and capturing high-value targets.

It can also fire Hellfire missiles

The MQ-9A Reaper can now carry eight AGM-114 Hellfire rockets. The armed drone has been capable of carrying four Hellfire missiles in the past. MQ-9s will receive the software upgrade before the end. Although the MQ-9 can fire Hellfire missiles from other drones it is not currently possible.

It can refuel fighter jets

MQ-9's high fuel efficiency makes it possible to refuel fighter jets. Its mission set may expand in the future to include maritime interdiction, air strike coordination, and combat search and rescue. These capabilities have already been proven useful in new contexts. If the Reaper is the next generation fighter jet, it may become more versatile and multi-purpose than many people think.
