Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

Although the United States, Russia, as well as other countries, want to use modern aircraft more often, Ukraine lacks the resources necessary to train its troops on these aircraft. The Ukrainians may have been trained in Western countries on vehicles and aircraft but they do not have the same training for drones. The Ukrainians are used a lot to trucks and older equipment, so drones are much easier for them to use. Drones can be operated by soldiers without the need for pilots. Drones can also be used in a similar way to video games.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military uses an unusual approach to fighting ISIS in east Ukraine. Octocopters are equipped with thermal cameras and can be used for night-time missions. Some drones are fitted with anti-tank weapons and even have the capability to light up columns. These drones are very maneuverable and can hold up to 11 lbs of payload. Small size allows drones to fly low over targets, dropping munitions.

Aerorozvidka started out as an IT enthusiast organization. Today, Aerorozvidka is a military-grade air reconnaissance unit. The first mission of the organization was to operate a drone company. But, over time, it became a fully-fledged unit, with its own head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Aerorozvidka is dependent on crowdfunding and donations to support its operations, since many components of drones are made in the US.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplied Ukraine with the armed "Switchblade", drones that are capable of hitting Russian tanks hundreds of miles away. These unmanned aerial vehicles were developed by the US Air Force in response to Ukrainian requirements. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. But there is no concrete information on how the Switchblades will be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade small drone can be launched easily from a tube. It is capable of traveling 40 kilometers. The Switchblade has a range of 40 kilometers and can hit Russian convoys up to 6 miles, unlike Bayraktar. These small aircraft are easy to set up during conflicts like the Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly faster than the Bayraktar which is currently the U.S. ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced that it would provide $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine. One of those packages includes the delivery of 121 unmanned planes, known as "Phoenix Ghosts," that are designed to terrorize Russian troops. These unmanned aircraft are designed to fly over large areas for between 30 and 40 minutes. They are equipped both with warheads as well as cameras. The Switchblade is a hovering munition weighing 5.5 pounds that can destroy tanks and armored vehicles.

These lightweight, small aircrafts can be operated from land, sea, and air thanks to their powerful, low-flying, gimbal. In an aerial conflict like this, every advantage an opponent holds over the other side is important. Russian kamikaze-equipped drones are a direct threat. This capability is crucial for Ukraine's military because it can easily break Russian sieges, and attack command-and controller nodes. Even though such capabilities would pose a serious risk to both sides, Ukraine could win if it can use small drones to make a difference in battle.

U.S. drones loitering

Russia is integrating ZALA KYB loitering weapons into its military arsenal. These drones are able to use lethal loitering munitions in the manner of bazookas. These autonomous killing machines could be a result of the use of loitering drones. However, observers and pundits worry about this. What can the U.S. do?

Kirby claims that the U.S. government sent more than 121 Switchblade loitering helicopters to Ukraine in order to aid Kiev against Russian forces. The Switchblade drone is 5.5 pounds and can hover over an area for thirty to forty minutes. It is fitted with a camera and a small warhead. Its purpose is to destroy the opposition forces in Ukraine.
